REACH is a European Union regulation on the registration, evaluation, authorization and restriction of chemical substances. It came into force on June 1, 2007 to replace various EU directives and regulations through a single system. REACH has several objectives:
- Improve the protection of human health and the environment against the risks that chemical substances can pose.
- Hold people who market chemical substances responsible for understanding and managing the risks associated with their use.
- Improve innovation and competitiveness of the chemical industry in the European Union.
- Promote alternative methods of assessing the hazards of substances.
- Guarantee the free movement of substances in the internal market of the EU.
